We had an exam last Monday. Which means that the days following it were dedicated to almost everything other than studying.
Tuesday evening started with dinner and drinks at Alewife for a friend's birthday. Alewife is a new-ish bar in my neighborhood. They have a fantastic selection of beer and the atmosphere is phenomenal. I think the building used to be an old insurance company
's office. It's kind of got the feel of an old bank building. As good as the beer list/atmosphere are, the food leaves a bit to be desired. Their duck fat fries are phenomenal and they have a pretty solid burger. But at $15 it is overpriced. I've never been horrified by anything I've eaten there, but it is overpriced and tries too hard. I'm hoping for some improvements. After dinner, we went to Ram's Head Live downtown to see Robyn. Most people will probably remember Robyn for her 90s hit Show Me Love. I was introduced to her new stuff but a friend in school --really fun Europop. Love this song. The show was fantastic--tons of energy, lots of dancing. Good times.
Thursday I convinced some people to go get Ethiopian with me. I've been to this amazing place a few times and have been recently seriously craving it. Is there anything more fun than eating with your hands? Plus, I've got a friend who grew up in Kenya (Dad was the doctor for a village there) and who did a lot of traveling on the continent. Spent time in Ethiopia and now does all of the ordering whenever we go. I have no idea what we eat half the time, but I do know that the tibs beef is to die for. Followed up dinner with a glass of Resurrection at Brewer's Art. Which was named the best bar in the country by Esquire. It is a great bar with wonderful beers on tap. Not sure I'd go as far as Esquire though!
Friday I went climbing. Got defeated by a 5.6 called Stupid Kitty. Really fun climb that I'm going to need to definitely try again next time I go. Need to do it earlier in the day so that I haven't killed my arms before I even get on it. Climbing was followed by a group outing to the Aquarium which was great. It's $7 on Fridays after 5 which is an amazing deal. I forgot how much fun it is! Plus I got to see the new Jellyfish exhibit which was fantastic. Jellyfish (when not stinging you) = coolest lava lamp ever!

Saturday I got a facial (this kind, not the other one...) in the morning and wandered around Locust Point in the rain. Actually was kind of nice--it's a new part of the city for me and I don't mind rainy days. Gives the city a whole different feel. Then I spent the rest of the day baking and listening to This American Life. (plus did a tiny bit of studying...)
I made chocolate cupcakes with chocolate coffee buttercream. DELICIOUS. (if i do say so myself)
Then Sunday, I went up to the Charles Theater to see Biutiful with a friend. Included in the ticket were bagels and coffee, plus a talk after the movie. I really really enjoyed the movie. It is an extremely gritty look at a man's life in modern-day Barcelona. It is about his struggles with life, death, and the grey areas of morality. The talk afterwards was a lot of old people saying it was too long, or an ugly film. But I totally disagree. Bardem was phenomenal. And even in the seeming ugliness that it was showing, I think it is an amazingly beautiful film, and one that gets at true humanness.
Sunday night was a low key superbowl party. And Monday morning it was back to reality.
